My Work

Hi.

My name is Jennifer Houlton. I'm an actor, a writer, and a director.

I began acting at age 8 on the NBC Soap Opera, The Doctors.
I was on the show for ten years until I decided to go college --Cornell University.

An Episode of The Doctors

I wrote a screenplay play based on the experience of "growing up" on a soap opera. SWIMMING DRUNK AT NIGHT was a Semi Finalist in the 2008 Gotham Screenplay Writing Awards.

Shortly after Cornell, I studied and apprenticed with experimental Pioneer, Joseph Chaikin, and accompanied his group the Winter Project, to the International Experimental Theatre Festival in Curacas, Venezuela. I wrote about the festival for VARIETY. After that I started writing plays and screenplays:

My First Play EVERYTHING WE'VE EVER WANTED was produced at Manhattan Class Company (MCC) After that MCC produced my plays, BURT LANCASTER starring Melora Walters, and ELEPHANT starring Robert Lupone and Thomas Gibson.

My other plays include STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN co-writer with actor/writer Cara Seymour (Hotel Rwanda, The Savages, Dancer in the Dark etc) STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN was chosen to open OBIE AWARD WINNING, Cucaracha Theatre's 10th Anniversary Season.

ALLIGATOR IN BLOOM (Starring Julianne Nicholson at The New Group) and LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT (Back House Productions)

My screenplays include SHOT OF LOVE, SWIMMING DRUNK AT NIGHT , and WATER, a feature that I wrote and directed off season in Fire Island in 2004.

WATER stars Idina Menzel (Tony Award Winner WICKED), Michael Shannon (2009 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD), and Shea Whigham (Wristcutters:A Love Story) and features an original soundtrack by John Parish
